Bamboo Flooring

A simple guide to bamboo flooring

Bamboo is a grass and as such is a very ‘green’ choice for flooring as it is a fast growing renewable source, its added attraction is that termites do not eat it. Being a grass and not a timber, the boards have to be constructed, there are three different ways in which this is done and each gives a very different look, see below. 90mm boards are 15mm thick and are tongue and groove, wide board (130mm) Floating floor boards are click system. All are pre-finished in the factory, so they need no sanding and polishing. The tongue and groove 90mm boards are designed to be direct stuck onto concrete (we strongly advise the prior application of a moisture barrier -  we can supply you with both the glue and the moisture barrier if you want to install yourself). The wide board Engineered / Floating floorboards can either be direct stuck or floated on acoustic underlay.

All of the 3 different styles of board are given a final coat of commercial grade Aluminium Oxide for added durability.

Compressed/StrandWoven Bamboo

Compressed (either tongue and groove or floating) bamboo is twice as hard as Jarrah, (measures 2,500psi on the Janka scale of hardness) and has half the expansion and contraction of timber, it has a unique grain that some people confuse with timber. It is constructed by shredding bamboo poles, then immersing them in a bonding agent (resin), it is then compressed in a 2000 tonne press for 24 hours. Our compressed bamboo comes in three colours, coffee, suede and natural (latter as shown in picture) the finish comes in semi-gloss only. We can supply beading and reducers to match.

Vertical

Vertical bamboo has a fine grained linear look, the typical knots or internodes that typify bamboo are not as obvious with this style of board, the sections are bonded (Laminated) together widthways. The two colours stocked are coffee and natural. Both are available in Full gloss and in Semi-gloss, you also have a choice of wide or narrow boards. We can supply beading and reducers to match.

Horizontal

This method of construction gives a board that is unmistakably bamboo, with its large clearly visible internodes (knots). It is constructed with 3 layers of bamboo laid sandwich style at right angles to the layer above to give a strong and stable product. As with the vertical boards, the choice of colour is either natural or coffee (the latter as illustrated in the photo), in either a full gloss or semi gloss and in either wide or narrow boards. We can supply beading and reducers to match.
